Today is Labor Day here in the U.S. and it's the unofficial end of summer. It's bitter sweet, but we're excited fall is right around the corner. To me watermelon really exemplifies summer and we unofficial ended summer with some watermelon ourselves. It's the staple at every barbecue, float trip down the river, and just an evening out on the patio. When I eat watermelon it makes me feel like a kid again. It makes me think of the times you try to see who can spit seeds the furthest. Which makes me wonder if kids these days will ever know what fun that is? With seedless watermelons everywhere these days it seems like a slim chance. Part of the fun of a watermelon was spitting the seeds and the fear if you swallowed one a watermelon would grow inside of you. It was about getting hosed off because you got sticky watermelon all over you. Let's be honest, there's no way to eat one without it running down your arms. Sadly though as you get older you switch from using your hands and no plate, to a spoon, some salt, and a plate. I guess that's when we become boring adults. I will say though, I was surprised a few weeks ago when I ate my first orange watermelon. I had no idea they even existed. When I cut it open I thought we had a bad one on our hands. I was definitely wrong though and it was pretty great. Plus, it had the biggest seeds so I got to be a kid again. As Labor Day unofficially closes out the summer, I look forward to the next juicy watermelon that makes summer, summer.
P.S. To all you non-watermelon loving people out there – What's wrong with you guys?
