"Bicycle, Bicycle, Bicycle, I want to ride my bicycle" -Queen
Did you know bicycles have been around since the late 19th century? And as of a 2011 article by The Economist, there are more than a billion bicycles in the world. Yes, a BILLION. Which is pretty crazy, to say the least.
I've been asked, liked many of you I'm sure, what their favorite Christmas present was. I always had a hard time with that, but I do think it was a bicycle. I remember coming downstairs and seeing all the gifts under the tree, but it was the bicycle that caught my eye. I remember as soon as we were done with all the gifts I immediately went out to ride it. I also remember being sad because I couldn't take it to my grandparents. Having a bike as a kid is so much fun. We used to ride them all over the neighborhood with other kids. We used to ride down steep hills and see who could coast the furthest. We got kinda crazy and tried to jump them off dirt piles. Which, by the way, resulted in many cuts and bruises. It's also how I met one of my good childhood friends, all because I was riding my bike around. When you're a kid with a bike it's pure freedom. It's like you could ride for days. And, before cell phones, your parents always knew where you were by the pile of bikes in someones front yard. Oh, to be a kid again.
Being an adult, bikes are still fun. Now, however, I don't really take them off many jumps. Plus, I probably couldn't just ride around all day long either. They still provide the enjoyment of riding around and exploring. They're fun as a beach cruiser, road bike, mountain bike, or even just rolling around a campground. They're great for fitness and generally transportation. Maybe one day we can be more like Europe and make them apart of our every day commute. It would benefit us as humans and ultimately benefit the environment. I think bicycles are just great looking creations. They are like mobile works of art. So, if you haven't gotten out on a bike in while, maybe now is the time. Go back to being a kid with the freedom of a bike. If you're worried just remember, it's just like riding a bike again, you don't forget.
P.S. to all you dudes with your giant jacked up trucks, no body cares. They never leave the road anyway. I'd be more impressed if you rode a bike instead.
